Kathmandu : Nepal’s economy has received a significant injection of foreign currency as remittance inflows soared by 35.4 percent in the first three months of the fiscal year 2025/26 (mid-July to mid-October).
The total inflow reached an impressive Rs. 553.31 billion during the review period, marking a sharp acceleration compared to the 11.9 percent increase recorded in the same period of the previous year.
In US Dollar terms, remittances also saw a robust growth of 29.2 percent, totaling $3.94 billion. This is significantly higher than the 10.6 percent growth seen last year, underscoring the strong role of migrant workers in supporting the country's external sector stability .
The month of Ashoj (mid-September to mid-October) alone saw an inflow of Rs. 201.22 billion, a substantial rise from Rs. 144.17 billion in the corresponding month of the prior year.
This surge in remittances helped the Net Secondary Income (net transfer) to reach Rs. 610.61 billion, up from Rs. 443.76 billion in the same period of the previous year.
The sharp increase in remittance inflows directly correlates with a surge in the number of Nepalis seeking foreign employment. The data highlights a strong and sustained momentum in labor migration .
The number of Nepali workers taking first-time approval for foreign employment reached 123,459. This represents an increase from the 110,654 approvals recorded in the same period a year earlier.
Approvals for renewed entry also saw a notable increase, rising to 77,257 from 59,939 in the previous year.
The combined rise in both first-time and renewed employment approvals indicates that new opportunities are being explored, while existing workers are also extending their stay abroad, contributing to the record inflow of funds through formal channels.
